You Don’t Need to Be a Pro to Coach: Why We Need More Grassroots Mentors
Apr. 05, 2025
At Crossfield Minor Soccer Association (CMSA), we believe one thing above all else: it takes a village to support and develop our youth. And nowhere is that more true than on the sidelines of a grassroots soccer field.
Every season, we see kids filled with energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity—eager to play, learn, and grow. But too often, what holds them back isn’t a lack of talent or desire—it’s a shortage of mentors willing to step into a coaching role.
The truth is: you don’t need to be a professional athlete or have years of technical experience to be a great grassroots coach. What matters most is showing up with heart, patience, and a willingness to learn alongside your players.
Passion Beats Perfection
Great grassroots coaching doesn’t come from having the perfect drill or flawless knowledge of the game. It comes from high-fives after tough efforts, encouragement when kids get frustrated, and creating an environment where every child feels seen, included, and supported.
In fact, some of our most impactful coaches started out as hesitant parents who simply wanted to help. They didn’t think they had what it took. But by leaning on our CMSA support network, using the tools we provide, and staying committed to our shared philosophy—they’ve become true mentors in every sense of the word.
You're Not Alone—We're in This Together
Our CMSA Coach Philosophy is built around four pillars: integrity, development, community, and fun. We don’t expect perfection. We expect presence. We don’t expect mastery. We expect momentum. And above all, we don’t expect you to do it alone.
From day one, new coaches are supported with easy-to-follow practice plans, guidance from experienced mentors, and regular check-ins. We also offer training tailored for new grassroots coaches—no jargon, no pressure—just practical tools and encouragement.
What You’ll Gain

It Takes a Village—and You Belong in It
