Supporting Girls in Sports: Strengthening Our Communities and Future

The Challenge: Understanding Girls’ Dropout Rates in Soccer

Girls participate in sports at high rates in early childhood, but studies show a sharp decline in engagement as they reach adolescence. According to Canadian Women & Sport, by age 14, girls drop out of sports at a rate twice that of boys. By the time they reach adulthood, only 16% of adult women regularly participate in sports. The key reasons for this dropout rate include lack of confidence, fewer role models, inadequate access to facilities, and social pressures.

A recent survey conducted by the Canadian Youth Sports Report found that 1 in 3 girls leave sports due to a lack of belonging, while 1 in 4 leave because they feel they are not skilled enough. These statistics highlight the need for better support structures to keep girls engaged in soccer and other sports.

The Role of the Community in Supporting Girls in Soccer

Community-driven initiatives are critical in reversing these trends. Crossfield Minor Soccer Association (CMSA) aligns with our key strategic pillars to create an environment that fosters long-term engagement for girls in soccer. Here’s how we can make a difference:

  1. Integrity - By implementing transparency in coaching and program structures, we ensure that all girls have access to high-quality development opportunities. This includes creating mentorship programs where experienced female athletes support younger players, fostering confidence and skill development.

  2. Community and Family - A sense of belonging is a crucial factor in retention. We can improve engagement by promoting all-girls teams, organizing soccer-themed social events, and ensuring every girl feels valued, regardless of skill level. Additionally, encouraging female parents to take active roles as coaches, team managers, or volunteers provides young girls with strong role models. When girls see women leading within their soccer community, they are more likely to stay engaged and consider giving back to the program themselves in the future.

  3. Club - Supporting female participation means providing governance and policies that reflect diversity and inclusion. This includes training coaches to understand gender-specific challenges and ensuring that club leadership represents the voices of female athletes.

  4. Development - Player growth is not just about skill development but also about personal development. Soccer teaches resilience, teamwork, and leadership—all essential for success beyond the field. By emphasizing these values in training sessions and competitions, we reinforce the broader benefits of the sport.

How Parents Can Support Their Daughters in Sport

Parental encouragement plays a significant role in keeping girls engaged in sports. Here are some key ways parents can support their daughters:

  • Encourage, Don’t Pressure: Let your daughter set her own goals in sports rather than imposing high expectations. Focus on fun and growth rather than performance.

  • Normalize Female Athletes as Role Models: Introduce your daughter to professional female athletes, encourage watching women’s soccer games, and celebrate achievements of female players at all levels.

  • Advocate for Equal Opportunities: Speak up for more all-girls programs, equitable field access, and proper funding for female soccer development.

  • Promote a Growth Mindset: Remind your daughter that skills improve with practice and effort, and that failure is a part of learning.

The Lasting Impact of Sports on Girls' Lives

Participation in soccer builds essential life skills that go beyond the pitch. Studies show that girls who stay in sports are more likely to succeed academically, develop leadership skills, and feel more confident in their abilities. These skills translate into strong professional careers, healthier relationships, and overall well-being.

At Crossfield Minor Soccer Association, we recognize the importance of empowering young female athletes. By fostering an environment that supports skill development, leadership, and long-term engagement, we are not just developing soccer players—we are developing future leaders.

Let’s continue to champion girls in sports, ensuring they have every opportunity to grow, succeed, and inspire the next generation.
